MOON
October's Full Moon

The October Hunter Moon, the full moon following September's Harvest Moon, has deep roots in both natural and cultural traditions. In Native American and early European agrarian societies, this full moon was a vital time for preparing for winter. After the crops were harvested under the Harvest Moon, the fields were cleared, and animals began to fatten for the cold months ahead. This made it an ideal time to hunt, as deer and other game were at their most robust, ensuring a strong food supply for the winter months. Hence, the October full moon came to be known asthe "Hunter's Moon.

Today, most of us no longer depend on hunting to prepare for winter, yet the Hunter Moon's symbolic meaning of readiness and resilience still holds value. In modern life, the Hunter Moon can represent the time to gather resources, both literal and metaphorical, in anticipation of the year ending. Just as hunters sought to secure sustenance, we can use this period as an opportunity to focus on what we need— whether that be financial security, emotional resilience, or physical health—to ensure we’re well-prepared for the future and for the coming winter season.
Spiritually, the Hunter Moon is also a time to address what no longer serves us. Just as early hunters would cull the herd, we too can look at our lives and see where we can make cuts—whether it’s eliminating bad habits, toxic relationships, or unnecessary distractions. Incorporating the Hunter Moon’s themes of preparation, and gathering into a modern-day ritual can be a powerful way to align with nature's rhythms. Below is a simple yet meaningful ritual to celebrate October’s Hunter Moon.
Reflecting that it is traditionally a season when much is askedof us. Not only do we need to continue our day to day lives but we add celebrations and other commitments.
